A Brief History of Wakeboarding

Since the beginning of time people have been searching for better and more exciting ways to ride the water.  As early as the 1700’s natives in Hawaii were the first to be reported surfing!  Once the first motor was invented, it just seemed natural for thrill seekers to ride the waves made by the speeding boats, or the “wakes”.

In the mid to late 1970’s, two guys by the names of Allan Byrne and Kevin Jarrett invent Skurfing, a combination of surfboarding and water skiing.  In 1980, George Darby and Roger Firehock mass produce and sell skurf-boards around Australia.  In 1985, Tony Finn starts shipping the Skurfer across the world, bringing much attention to the new sport.

In 1991, Herb O’Brien of HO Sports introduces the first Hyperlite board, which revolutionizes wake boarding.  Wake boarders can now easily start in deeper waters.

In 1993, wake boarding officially becomes a sport, and the World Skiboarding Association changes its name to the World Wakeboarding Association.  In 1997, wake boarding is introduced in the X-Games.

Since then, wake boarding and its athletes have developed tons of tricks and divisions of competition.  Whether on the beach or lake, for competition or recreation, wake boarding is a fun and exciting sport for everyone!
